About Us

Stonelight® was founded by Dick Metchear, a well-known Lighting Designer, and his wife, Betsy Piper, a commercial Interior Designer. Dick was the Lighting Consultant on the PBS program, “This Old House” with Bob Villa for ten years. After selling his four lighting stores in the Boston area, Dick moved to Florida in 1991 where he concentrated on Lighting Design and Specification for Architects and Developers.

In Florida, Dick found that metal bollards, previously installed for outdoor pathway lighting, were deteriorating very quickly in the harsher climate. He and Betsy established Stonelight in 1996 to provide pre-cast concrete bollards in a variety of sizes, colors and shapes to meet the demand for durable pathway lighting that would stand up to strong sun, high wind and other situations requiring strength and durability. One of their first jobs was for Walt Disney’s “Wild Animal Kingdom” where the bollards were capped with special Balinese carvings. The company prides itself on working with a client to customize bollards to meet a client’s special requirements.

Over the years, many new designs have been added to the Stonelight product line. As security became more of an issue, Stonelight developed a decorative, lighted security bollard with a concrete-filled steel pipe at its core.  The Stonelight Security Bollard can stop a panel truck going 35 mph.

In 2009, the Stonelight Solar Bollard was introduced—a stand-alone solar bollard, independent of remote panels or wiring, that can store enough solar energy to produce light for 5 nights without sunshine during the day. The solar panel is secured flush with the concrete frame of the bollard top. The microprocessor controls the scheduling LED light source. In addition, Stonelight offers 4- or 8-watt 50,000 Hr. LED lamps in most of its current designs.

Stonelight strives to address the ever-changing needs of customers, including energy efficiency
and customized designs. We value your feedback so please contact us at info@stonelight.com
